What Does It Mean To Be Human?
What Does It Mean to Be Human? A Biblical Answer
In a world where artificial intelligence can mimic human faces, voices, and even personalities, the question of what makes us human has never been more urgent. The Bible offers a clear and powerful answer, rooted in the very first chapter of Genesis.
Why Are We Asking "What Does It Mean to Be Human?"
Questions about human identity are everywhere right now. You may have heard them framed in different ways:
Who gets to define what a human is?
Is every human life valuable at every stage?
What makes humans different from animals?
Can you have real companionship with artificial intelligence?
Can technology eventually make humans immortal?
These are not just philosophical questions. They show up in workplaces, schools, homes, and relationships. The line of what it means to be human is being blurred, and it matters deeply how we answer it.
Where Does the Bible Define Humanity?
The clearest starting point is Genesis 1:26-28. This is God's foundational statement on what it means to be human, and every other question about human identity should be brought back here.
"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created Him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'" - Genesis 1:26-28
This passage reveals three things that make humans uniquely human.
1. You Are Made to Reflect God
What Does "Image of God" Actually Mean?
The phrase "in our image" was used to describe nothing else in all of creation. Not the animals, not the stars, not the oceans. Only humans. This is what sets you apart.
Think of it like a coin. A U.S. quarter is made of about 15 cents worth of metal, yet it is worth 25 cents. Why? Because of the image stamped on it. The image of George Washington, backed by the authority of the United States, gives it value beyond its raw materials.
Your value works the same way. It is not your DNA, your cells, or your molecules that make you valuable. It is the image of God stamped on you at the moment of your creation.
What Does "Likeness" Add to This?
The word "likeness" in Genesis 1:26 goes a step further than image. If image is about who you reflect, likeness is about how you carry that reflection. To bear God's likeness means to act like Him, think like Him, and care like Him. When the world encounters you, it should get a glimpse of the God you reflect.
Your Value Is Received, Not Achieved
This is critical. Many people operate as though human value must be earned through success, ability, or achievement. But God's Word says otherwise. Your value is given, not gained.
It does not matter whether you are in the womb or outside of it. It does not matter your race, your bank account, your relationship status, or your resume. God said, "Let this life be," and He put His image on it. That value cannot be taken away.
2. You Are Made for Relationship with God
Why Does God Speak "To" Humans and Not to the Rest of Creation?
Throughout Genesis 1, God speaks things into existence. He says, "Let there be light," and light appears. But when He creates mankind, something changes. The text says God spoke "to them." Not just about them or over them, but directly to them.
This small shift carries enormous meaning. Humans were not just created to exist. They were created to exist in communion with God, in a relationship where He speaks and they respond.
God made pandas. He made puppies. He made some of the most beautiful creatures imaginable. But He does not speak to them. He speaks to you. You have been chosen for relationship by the Creator of the universe.
What Does This Mean When You Feel Alone?
Many people today feel deeply isolated, even while surrounded by others and connected to millions online. When you feel unseen, disconnected, or abandoned, remember this: there is an all-powerful, all-loving God who made you specifically for relationship with Him.
His fingerprints are on your heart. His voice is woven into your soul. You were made to know God and to be known by God. That is unique among all of creation.
3. You Are Called to Represent God
What Is the Purpose of Human Life According to the Bible?
God gives humanity a clear mission in Genesis 1:28: "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it."
This is not simply a command to have children. The deeper purpose is to multiply the image of God across all of the earth. As humans multiply, so does the presence of God's image in the world. Every new life is another image bearer, another person with dignity and value, another reflection of the Creator.
The goal is not more humans for the sake of numbers. The goal is more of God's image filling His creation.
Does This Mean Christians Should Stay Inside Church Buildings?
No. God does not send His image bearers into a building. He sends them into the earth. Into neighborhoods. Into workplaces. Into relationships. Into communities that have never seen what God looks like in action.
Evangelism is not only vocal. It is also visible. When you show up to serve, to build, to care, to give, you are taking the image of God into places it might not otherwise reach. You are reflecting His likeness to people who have been told they are worthless, and showing them they have value.
Why Sin Complicates All of This
Sin has distorted all three of these realities. It has warped how we see ourselves, broken our relationship with God, and confused our sense of purpose. Many people feel like they need more than just humanity. They feel like being human is not enough.
What we actually need is a better human.
How Jesus Restores What It Means to Be Human
Is Jesus the Perfect Example of What Humans Were Meant to Be?
Yes. Jesus is described in Scripture as the image of the invisible God. He shows us what God looks like and what humans were always meant to look like. He is the fullest expression of both.
By His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus does three things:
He restores your value. His death on the cross declares how much your life is worth to God.
He restores your relationship with the Father. He bridges the gap that sin created and makes forgiveness possible.
He sends you into the world in His name and power to fill the earth with His image.
The more you become like Jesus, the more fully human you become. Following Him is not a departure from humanity. It is the restoration of it.
Life Application
This week, find one specific way to take the image of God outside of your comfort zone and into the world around you. It might be serving in your community, having a conversation with a neighbor, or simply showing up for someone who feels unseen. You were not made to keep God's image to yourself. You were made to multiply it.
As you go, ask yourself these questions:
Do I actually believe my value comes from God, or am I still trying to earn it through achievement?
Am I living in relationship with God, or have I been running from the very thing I was created for?
Where in my daily life am I reflecting the image and likeness of God to the people around me?
Am I keeping my faith inside a building, or am I taking it into the earth the way God intended?
You were created in the image of God, for relationship with God, to represent God. That is what it means to be human. And through Jesus, that humanity can be fully restored.
