Faith in Motion

Moving from Intellectual Faith to Active Faith: Lessons from Joshua

Faith without action is merely an intellectual exercise. The real power of faith comes when we move from simply believing to actively following God's direction in our lives. Let's explore how Joshua led Israel with active faith and what we can learn from his example.

What Does it Mean to Have Faith in Motion?

Faith in motion means focusing entirely on God rather than human leaders or our own understanding. Just as Joshua directed Israel to focus on the Ark of the Covenant, we must keep our eyes fixed on God's presence and promises.

The Ark contained reminders of God's past faithfulness:

  • The Ten Commandments

  • Aaron's rod that miraculously budded

  • A jar of manna from the wilderness

These items reminded Israel that God had been faithful before and would be faithful again. True faith isn't blind - it's built on remembering God's past faithfulness while trusting His present guidance.

How Do We Follow God into unfamiliar paths?

God often leads us down unfamiliar paths. Even though Joshua had previously scouted the Promised Land, God took Israel a completely different route. This teaches us that:

  • Following God requires letting go of our preferred route

  • We can't rely on old patterns to receive new blessings

  • God may lead us through obstacles rather than around them

What Does it Mean to Prepare for the Impossible?

When facing the flooded Jordan River, Joshua told the people to consecrate themselves because God would do wonders. Faith prepares for miracles rather than hedging bets on failure. We must:

  • Expect God to move supernaturally

  • Position ourselves for divine intervention

  • Stop preparing for disappointment

Why Must Faith Move Before the Miracle?

The priests had to step into the rushing water before it parted. This teaches us that faith often requires action before we see results. We must:

  • Take steps of obedience before seeing the outcome

  • Trust God's character more than our circumstances

  • Move forward expecting God to make a way

Life Application:

Remember: Just as Jesus stepped into the waters of baptism for us, He has already made the way. The question is - will you follow?

Questions to reflect on:

  • Am I focusing on God's presence and past faithfulness or fixating on obstacles?

  • Where am I trying to follow old routes instead of God's new direction?

  • What step of faith is God asking me to take before seeing the miracle?

Challenge:

Take one concrete step of faith this week before seeing how God will work it out. This might mean:

  • Having that difficult conversation you've been avoiding

  • Making a commitment you've been hesitating about

  • Starting something new God has been prompting you toward
