Fully Known
When God Knows Everything About You: Finding Peace in Being Fully Known
Have you ever wondered what would happen if someone truly knew everything about you - your thoughts, fears, insecurities, and hidden struggles - and still chose to love you? This isn't just a hypothetical question. According to Psalm 139, this is exactly the reality we live in with God.
The Question We Never Really Answer
When someone asks "How are you?" what's your typical response? Most of us default to "I'm good," "I'm fine," or "I'm busy." We've become experts at presenting the edited version of ourselves - the polished, put-together version that looks good on social media and in church.
But what happens when we encounter someone who sees past all of that? What happens when we realize that God sees the unedited version of who we are?
God Knows Everything About You
Psalm 139:1-6 reveals a startling truth: "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely."
God is omniscient - He knows everything. This isn't just knowing facts about you; He knows your thoughts before you think them, your words before you speak them, and the motives behind your actions. There's no private compartment, no secret browser history, no hidden jealousy that escapes His notice.
Two Reactions to Being Fully Known
This reality can produce two very different responses. There's comfort in knowing "God knows me completely - I am fully seen and understood." But there's also confrontation in realizing "God really knows everything - even the parts I try to hide."
Both reactions are valid. Being fully known sounds wonderful until you realize that nothing is hidden from God's sight.
God Is Everywhere You Go
David continues in verses 7-12: "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."
God is omnipresent - He is present in all of time at the same time. He's not just aware of your past and present; He's already in your future. He's already at the place of the person you're becoming.
You're Never Alone in Your Pain
This truth becomes especially powerful during difficult seasons. Whether you're walking through loss, disappointment, or unexpected tragedy, God is present in that pain. He's not surprised by your circumstances, even when you are.
During dark seasons when you feel most alone, remember that the God who knows everything about you has never left your side. He hears every word, feels every tear, and is present through it all.
You Were Created with Purpose
Verses 13-16 remind us: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
God isn't just aware of you - He created you. You're not mass-produced or random. The same God who formed galaxies formed you, uniquely and with purpose. Every detail of your life was planned and known before you even existed.
From Birth to Eternity
God cares about your beginning and your future. This is beautifully illustrated in the Christmas story, where God entered humanity as Jesus. His life and death prove that every life is valuable from birth to death and into eternity.
Permission to Be Honest with God
Psalm 139 takes an unexpected turn in verses 19-22, where David expresses anger and frustration to God. This isn't a mistake in the text - it's the whole point. David doesn't hide his emotions from God; he brings them directly to Him.
You have permission to do the same. You don't have to pretend to be okay with God because He already knows you're not. He can handle your anger, fear, confusion, and disappointment. He's big enough for all of it.
Honesty Grows Where Safety Exists
When you feel distant from God, it's often because you haven't been honest with Him. The Lord isn't afraid of your honesty - He welcomes it. God is the safest place to tell the truth about what you're really experiencing.
The Prayer That Changes Everything
David ends this psalm with a powerful prayer in verses 23-24: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
Notice that David doesn't ask God to fix his circumstances. Instead, he asks God to search him, test him, and lead him. The deepest prayer begins with an honest self-examination.
Stop Pretending and Start Praying
Maybe you're exhausted from trying to look good, strong, or spiritual all the time. Perhaps the most spiritual thing you could do today is stop pretending and pray David's prayer: "Search me, God, and know my heart."
Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to have one completely honest conversation with God. Instead of presenting the polished version of yourself, bring Him your real thoughts, fears, and struggles. Remember that being fully known means you can be fully honest.
Ask yourself these questions:
What am I trying to hide from God that He already sees?
How has fear of being truly known affected my relationship with Him?
What would change in my life if I truly believed that God knows everything about me and still loves me?
Am I more focused on looking spiritual or being honest with God?
The God who knows you completely is the same God who created you with purpose and walks with you through every season. He's not asking for your perfect faith - He's asking for your honest one. When you realize you're fully known by God, you can finally stop pretending and start experiencing the freedom that comes from being authentically yourself before Him.
