Get Out of the Grave
Why Easter Matters More Than You Think: You're Dead and Don't Even Know It
Easter isn't just about celebrating something that happened 2,000 years ago. While we all know the story - Jesus died on Good Friday, stayed in the tomb Saturday, and rose on Sunday - the real question is: why does this matter for your life today?
The answer is simple yet profound: you're dead and you don't even know it. Many people are living in a spiritual grave, trapped by sin and unable to escape on their own. Unless something comes from the outside to rescue you, this grave is where you'll stay for eternity.
What Does Jesus' Resurrection Mean for Us Today?
Jesus didn't rise from the dead just to be admired or so we could eat chocolate eggs. He rose because He knows we're spiritually dead and desperately need Him. His resurrection wasn't God's final resurrection - it was only the beginning of more to come.
The apostle Paul explains this beautifully in Colossians chapter 3, where he writes to believers about what Jesus' resurrection means for their daily lives. His message is clear: if Jesus died and rose again, then we must also die and rise with Him.
How Do We Die With Christ?
Confession and Repentance of Sin
Dying with Christ begins with honestly confronting the sin in our lives. Paul lists several sins that were plaguing the Colossian believers: "'Put to death the sinful earthly things that are lurking within you have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world'" - Colossians 3:5 King James Version (KJV).
This list includes sexual sin, impure thoughts, unhealthy cravings, greed, materialism, anger, rage, mean behavior, hurtful language, crude language, and lying. Looking at this list, most of us can identify at least one area where we struggle.
Why We Avoid Confession
The reason many people never confess their sins isn't because of the sin itself - it's because of their silence about their sin. We're afraid of what we think will come next if we admit our failures. But here's the truth: what comes next with God isn't punishment, but amazing grace, mercy, and loving kindness.
Whatever you leave in the dark will grow in the dark. But when you bring sin into the light through confession and repentance, you open the door to freedom.
How Do We Rise With Christ?
The Role of Baptism
Those who die with Christ also get to rise with Christ. Romans 6:4-6 explains that this rising happens through baptism: "'For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives'" - Romans 6:4 King James Version (KJV).
Baptism represents our burial with Christ and our resurrection to new life. It's the physical act that demonstrates our spiritual reality - we've died to our old way of living and been raised to walk in newness of life.
Don't Make Excuses to Stay in the Tomb
Many people are good at making excuses for staying in the spiritual tomb. They say things like:
"I need to wait for my family to be present"
"I need to understand it better intellectually first"
"I need to feel more ready emotionally"
"I need to wait for the right time"
But delayed obedience is disobedience. When Jesus calls us out of the grave, our response should be immediate obedience, just like Lazarus when Jesus called him to "'come out'" - John 11:43 King James Version (KJV).
How Do We Walk With Christ?
Living in Newness of Life
Coming out of the grave through baptism isn't the end - it's the beginning of a new journey. Walking with Christ means setting your heart and mind on things above, not on earthly things. As Paul writes: "'Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth'" - Colossians 3:2 King James Version (KJV).
Being Unbound from Death Clothes
When Lazarus came out of the tomb, he was still wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus commanded others to "'loose him, and let him go'" - John 11:44 King James Version (KJV). Similarly, when we come out of our spiritual grave, we often still have "death clothes" - old sinful patterns that cling to us.
Walking with Christ involves allowing Him to gradually remove these death clothes. This includes struggles like:
Sexual sin and pornography
Materialism and greed
Escapism and avoidance
Unforgiveness and holding grudges
What to Do When You Stumble
There will be days when you stumble and fall back into old habits. When this happens, don't get back into the grave. Instead, confess your sins, repent again, get up, and take another step following Jesus.
The Promise of Easter
The promise of Easter is that Jesus, the sinless Son of God, died on the cross and rose from the dead to be the firstfruits of many more resurrections. His resurrection opens the door for your resurrection - from spiritual death to spiritual life, from bondage to freedom, from the grave to new life.
Life Application
This week, examine your life honestly. Are you still living in a spiritual tomb, trapped by sin and making excuses for why you can't fully follow Christ? If you've never confessed your sins and repented, today is the day to die with Christ. If you've repented but haven't been baptized, stop making excuses and rise with Christ through baptism. If you've been baptized but are still bound by old sinful patterns, ask Christ to help you walk in newness of life.
Ask yourself these questions:
What sins am I keeping hidden in the darkness instead of confessing them?
Am I making excuses for delaying obedience to Christ's commands?
What "death clothes" - old sinful patterns - am I still allowing to bind me?
Where are my eyes focused - on earthly things or on Christ above?
Easter matters because it's not just about what happened to Jesus 2,000 years ago - it's about what can happen to you today. You can move from death to life, from the tomb to freedom, from spiritual death to resurrection life in Christ.
